Chvrches: The Bones of What You Believe — Album Review
Sweet mother of Moses this album is good.
Chvrches sounds like M83 and Tegan & Sara had a lovechild on Planet Dance under the light of a synthesizer sun.
Bouncing beats and waves of keyboards will pick you up and turn wherever you listen into a dancefloor.
This three person act from Glasgow will immediately cement themselves as the best Scottish synthpop band you’ve ever heard. But you can’t just limit them to being able to put together punchy synth beats.
Singer Lauren Mayberry has an innocence to her voice that makes the emotional lyrics of tracks like “Tether” and “Lungs” tug at your heartstrings, while still having the strength to carry the up tempo dance numbers like “Science/Visions”.
The other two members of Chvrches, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, make lead singing appearances on “Under The Tide” and “You Caught The Light”, offering a nice change of sound on the more mellow numbers, as well as providing backing vocals on many of the other tracks.
“Now, I’ll be a gun, and it’s you I’ll come for.”
This album comes for you and latches on, plugging you straight into some synth that you won’t be able to resist. But I think it also has staying power. The dark tones and emotion underlying even the most dance worthy tracks resonate with your soul more than a flavour of the month, light hearted pop album release ever could.
