(And not the dog kind. The dog was just for a cute bonus.)
I’ve been back at the track lately.
My training schedule hasn’t been solid, with missed days due to work or being down, but I’ve been trying, and I’m working hard on my goal of being there 4 times a week. In the spring I might even get it up to 5 times a week.
I’ve had quite a few concerns as I was coming back.
Will I get hurt?
Am I too old?
Will I feel too slow?
The last one is my greatest concern.
It’s not even about BEING too slow. I just don’t want to FEEL slow.
I’ve always longed for that feeling of speed. Of my legs moving so quickly underneath me that it feels like the rest of my body can’t catch up.
But last night a few of those feelings were put to rest…for now.
I put on my track spikes for the first time since 2011, got into a three point start, and still felt explosive. I had a big banana grin on my face after that first run.
Then I set up some hurdles.
They were low, about a foot lower than regulation height. They were spaced out wider so I could get some extra steps in. But even in the first run, off the line, 8 steps to the first hurdle, left leg goes up, right leg snaps over, tempo quick…and my body didn’t explode.
It felt amazing.
I’m also glad it didn’t end up looking like this:
